We live in Langley, BC and were interested in starting a herd soon. We have had sheep in the past and were wanting to raise boer goats.  We were interested in one buck and 9 does. My question is what are the requirements in Canada to raise goats.  Do they all have to be registered? Where can I go to find out about pedigree? How do I know that I am buying a quality goat is really what I want to know.

There’s no requirment to register all of your goats in Canada. If you’re looking for high quality stock you could look up the CMGA members in your area and call or email them, that would be a good place to start. Do your research and ask the breeder about what’s important to your herd to see if thier animals would be suitable for your operation, maybe that particular breeder raises show quality stock and you want commercial animals and it wouldn’t make sense for you to purchase expensive purebreds. The only way to be sure of pedigree is to purchased registered boer goats, you can access the pedigree of registered Boers in Canada on the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation website so you know the background of the stock you’re buying.

My advice is get educated first about what a quality goat is and how best to care for them. Do not go to the auction and buy other peoples cast offs and expect to grow a quality herd. There is a manual you can get from CMGA that is of great value. It will also help you know if this is the choice for you.
Experience is the best teacher so find a friend that can help advise you as you go.
The saying goes your Buck is half your herd invest in him wisely.
Hope this helps just wish I would have done these things first I had to learn the hard way.

I copy and pasted this from another post I made earlier
in case you missed it

Good luck
